Originally posted to the NottheIML list, and sent to the Belfyr, May 2007.
I hereby call for suggestions for a name and arms for the proposed southern UK amalgamated branch.
Deadline for submissions
Tuesday 26 June 2007
Why a weekday?
Well, the first suggestion was 'end of June', which was agreeable, as it is the date of the ancient and honourable West Dragonshire summer tourney.
Setting the deadline as the Tuesday before the event allows me a few days to scan it and post it to this wiki
and
print to display them, at WD's ancient and honourable Summer Tourney (29 June - 1 July, listed in the Belfyr and Dragon's Tale).
I've asked Thomas Flamanc to review all the options, and help me do an initial conflict check, to ensure that all options have a good chance of being registered successfully.
From the submissions, we'll 'informally' choose up to three options to vote on in a formal, paper-based poll.
This poll will take place as soon as possible after the end-of-June deadline.
Guidelines
Members of the three shires can submit as many armory or name options as they like. I'll post the name and armory suggestions anonymously (ie. no submitter name).
For names, please include your documentation with the submission, to demonstrate that the group name is authentic and plausible, and suitable for our region.
We have several good heralds around (including Thomas Flamanc, Maredydd ap Gwilym, and of course our kingdom heraldic staff) who can help you, if you ask them nicely.
Suggestions that are on SCA College of Heralds forms are preferred, but not required.
At this stage, I can accept electronic versions of armory that are not on a form.
However, if your armory suggestion is chosen, you'll have to provide a completed set of forms to submit to the Edelweiss herald, and to include in the formal petition for change of status.
Remember that for branch arms, you do have to include the laurel wreath as a significant part of the design.

Tips
Raphe, Valeria, Mary and I discussed the 'theme' idea - developing armory from the charges in the existing arms of the shires.
Valeria wisely pointed out that something completely new, that is not related to any existing armory, would be at least as good as trying to cobble together charges or themes from existing arms.
This amalgamated group will be new - a new way to describe the pleasant and likeable community we enjoy playing with, across the south right now.
So don't feel obliged to incorporate waves, mountains, or swords to reflect the origins of this new group.
